About Mesob
A family-owned Ethiopian restaurant in Montclair, NJ, serving authentic dishes since 2003.

Who we are.
Mesob Ethiopian Restaurant was founded in 2003 by sisters Berekti and Akberet "Aki" Mengistu in Montclair, New Jersey.
Growing up in Ethiopia in a family of ten children, the sisters learned that food was how their family celebrated, welcomed guests and strengthened bonds. After Berekti built a career in corporate America while cooking Ethiopian meals on weekends, she and Aki decided to follow their hearts and open a restaurant — not simply to serve meals, but to share their culture and hospitality with their new community.
Over more than two decades, Mesob has grown from a family dream into one of New Jersey's most recognized Ethiopian restaurants, earning national awards and a loyal following of guests who travel from across the state for a meal.
What we believe.
Every dish tells a story. Every meal brings people closer.
Spices with purpose
Imported Ethiopian spices are blended to create layered heat, aroma and depth. Berbere, mitmita and turmeric are not just seasonings — they are the language of Ethiopian cooking.
Fresh preparation
Every sauce is prepared to order. Every spice is blended with intention. We cook with the patience traditional Ethiopian dishes require, because shortcuts would betray the recipes.
A shared table
Ethiopian food is naturally social. Platters arrive over injera for the table to explore together. The meal becomes a conversation, not just a meal.
What makes us different.
Mesob is not just a restaurant. It is a bridge between Ethiopian tradition and the Montclair community.
Our dining room welcomes families, couples, first-time diners and groups with the same generous spirit. Our menu includes a full range of vegan dishes that stand on their own, gluten-free injera available with advance notice, and traditional Ethiopian coffee served from a jebena. We are BYOB, making celebrations easier and more personal.
Whether you are planning a weeknight dinner, a birthday celebration for thirty, or a corporate catering event, the team at Mesob will shape the experience around your needs. Call us, visit us, or order online — we look forward to sharing our table with you.
